The new platform allows WhatsApp’s 700m users to send and receive free text, picture and voice messages through Google Chrome on a computer, but only if they use WhatsApp on an Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry. iPhone users need not apply.
To log into WhatsApp on the web, users need to scan a QR code using the WhatsApp smartphone app. The smartphone then needs to remain connected to the internet; if the phone runs out of battery or loses an internet connection, the web app ceases to operate.
The Facebook-owned company announced today that it was bringing its service to web browsers with a plugin for Google’s popular Chrome browser. It means WhatsApp users can carry on chats seamlessly from their phones or their desktops for the very first time.
WhatsApp, the most popular messaging tool of our times, has just pushed the envelope. The WhatsApp web client launched today is an extension of your phone. The web browser “mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device — this means all of your messages still live on your phone”, said a blog post on the WhatsApp blog.
You can initiate WhatsApp Web sessions from multiple computers, but only one can be active at a time - you'll be given an option to wrest control from another session. WhatsApp takes care of the security aspect by listing how many WhatsApp Web sessions are connected at any given time, and by letting you log out of all in one click via the mobile app.
Though WhatsApp states that the feature only works on Chrome, we found out that it also works on Opera Browser. The screenshots featured here are from Opera. Firefox and IE do not work.
The new feature actually is just a desktop synchronisation between your smartphone and the PC/tablet. The browser does not send any messages to the internet directly, but relays it to your smartphone, which sends and receives the messages. You can only use an existing WhatsApp account with physical access to the smartphone it is activated on.
WhatsApp lovers have now something to smile about because the app can now be operated from the web.
