Motion and Forces You just can’t force some things…
May the force be with you…always… • A force is a push or pull • A force can cause the motion of an object to change. • If you have played billiards, you know that you can force a ball at rest to roll into a pocket by striking it with another ball.
Rack ‘em • The force of the moving ball causes the ball at rest to move in the direction of the force. • Force does not always change velocity.
Balancing act - When two or more forces act on an object at the same time, the forces combine to form the net force. - Forces with opposite directions will counteract each other.
Working together… • Forces that have the same direction, can be added together.
I’m not lazy, its just inertia… • Inertia (ih NUR shuh) is the tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion. • Inertia is resistance to movement. • Moving objects will not change velocity or direction unless an outside force acts on them. • Stationary objects will not move at all unless acted on.
