Penny tax in Atlanta By: Marcus Elmore Donovan Whitaker
What is it? • The Penny tax is an option for a 1-cent special option sales tax that would last 10 years and raise an estimated $7 billion for transportation projects to ease congestion. • Heavy congestion in Atlanta is a reason some businesses do not bring their business to Atlanta. • Suggested back in July 2012
Arguments against it • Some members of the NAACP argue that too few of the projects would help poor, largely black parts of the region. • The Georgia chapter of the Sierra Club says the project list puts too much emphasis on roads. • John Sherman of the Fulton County taxpayers foundation said the state should create a traffic authority staffed with transportation experts to determine when and where such projects are done, and not leave the decisions to politicians, like Mayor Reed, who put together the bulk of the project lists.
Where does it Stand now?!? • Pre-voting-day polls show the ballot measure is headed for a narrow defeat. At the heart of the opposition is tea-party-fueled distrust of Georgia politicians who have been known to be careless with new spigots of taxpayer cash • Voters go to the Polls on Super Tuesday to vote on the Penny tax
