  2. Copyediting vs. Proofreading Copyediting involves issuing directions for how to develop and produce a document. Proofreading involves making sure the recommended edits were done correctly and the document is ready for publication. Think of proofreading as quality control.

  3. Placing marks on the page • Be neat • Make your marks easy to read • Use standard markings • Do not obscure correct type • Use a bright-color pencil • Remove stray marks • Be consistent So far, it’s the same as copyediting.

  4. The Differences • Proofreading marks always appear in both the margins and in the text. • Proofreading emendations go in the margin, not in the text itself. • Some proofreading spacing and typography marks are different.

  5. General rules for marginal marks • Create items from left to right. • Separate items with slashes. • If the markup is confusing, write out the corrected version in the margin. • Use one margin, not both.
