  1. 1 Timothy 2:9-15 • Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness--with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

  2. Why women are taking over The family and churches?

  3. Our title states a problem • The title states its position as a fact. • Do you agree with the title? • The title states - that women are taking over; and it seeks to answer why? • Whether or not one takes over or is “offered the job” one ends up in the same place.

  4. Feminism

  5. Feminism Defined • The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. • Given this definition: • Are you a feminist?

  6. Radical Feminism DefinedJone Johnson Lewis - About.com • Radical feminism is a philosophy emphasizing the patriarchal roots of inequality between men and women, or, more specifically, social dominance of women by men. Radical feminism views patriarchy as dividing rights, privileges and power primarily by gender, and as a result oppressing women and privileging men. Radical feminists tend to be more militant in their approach (radical as "getting to the root").

  7. Radical Feminism – • Radical feminism opposes existing political and social organization in general because it is inherently tied to patriarchy. Thus, radical feminists tend to be skeptical of political action within the current system, and instead support cultural change that undermines patriarchy and associated hierarchical structures. • Radical feminism opposes patriarchy, not men. To equate radical feminism to man-hating is to assume that patriarchy and men are inseparable, philosophically and politically.

  8. Men and Women Are Equal • In creation (Gen 1:26-27). • In redemption (John 3:16). • In need of praying for them (1 Tim 2:1-3). • In God’s desire to save them (1 Tim 2:4). • In worth (Matt 16:26).

  9. Not In Role - God created Patriarchy • When he made Adam first - Gen 2:18a • When he made Eve for Adam - 2:18b • When he made Eve from Adam - 2:21 • When he brought Eve to Adam - 2:22

  10. The Whole Of Scripture Attest To This • 1 Cor 11:3 – husband is head of wife • 1 Cor 11:8- woman made from man • 1 Cor 11:9 – woman made for man • Eph 5:23 – husband is head of wife • 1 Tim 2:9-15 – Adam was first formed then Eve • 1 Peter 3:6 – Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him lord.

  11. Folks Disagree With God • For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Romans 1:21-23

  12. Lack Of Teaching

  13. Older Women Are To Teach Them But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Titus 2:1-5

  14. What Does It Mean? • Sober – to disciple, moderate, make of sound mind. • Love their husbands – be fond of man, affectionate as a wife. • Love their children – fond of ones children. • Discreet – sound in mind, curbing ones desires and impulses, self controlled.

  15. What Does It Mean? • Chaste – exciting reverence, pure, clean, innocent, free from carnality, modest. • Keepers at home – a stayer at home, caring for the house, working at home. • Good – excellent, of good constitution, useful, distinguished. • Obedient to their own husbands – to arrange under, to subordinate, to subject oneself.

  16. Single Parent Homes Hurt Girls Also • She needs to see her mother submitting to her father. • The absence of a father prevents girls from seeing the proper example of how a women should live. • She gets taught from her mother to take care of herself and not to trust a man. • She learns to be self reliant, self sufficient, strong, independent and then she gets married. • Deuteronomy 6 includes teaching and modeling (Deut 6:7-9). • Sarah is a worthy example to emulate (1 Peter 3:6).

  17. Absence of Male Leadership

  18. Does God Know You (Gen 18:17-19) • Husbands need a plan to lead • Failure to plan is planning to fail. • Husbands need to communicate a plan – Josh 24:14-15 • Plans not communicated cannot be executed. • Husbands need to consider their wives in their plans. • Plans that don’t consider the team destroy moral. • You can’t ever answer “are we there yet” if you don’t know where you are going.

  19. Leadership Is Not About Force It Is About Voice • Pace, agenda, direction, instruction, where do we go for the answers for our family? • Often when men don’t women do – • Not because they are “taking over” but because he is quiet, unresponsive, uninterested, distracted, dismissive, detached, aloof, unaware or out of the loop etc.

  20. Leadership Is Not About Force It Is About Voice • It could be that he tried to lead and she would not listen or follow, so he stopped trying. • Now his default answer is – “whatever you want, it’s going to be your way anyway.” • It could be because he never had a plan to communicate, he is so often unaware and unattached that he has turned everything over to her. Now she is the “leader” by default.

  21. Maybe She’s Not “Taking Over” • Whoever speaks the most and the clearest usually leads. • Whose voice is heard most frequently? • Who sets forth the agenda for the family? • Who is the “go to” person in the family? • Who knows what is going on in the family? • Who is the problem solver in the family? • Who is the one being answered to most often in the family? • Who sets the tone for the family? • Whose word is followed most frequently? • There Is No Such Thing: As A Leaderless Home

  22. Preachers and Elders Teaching Them

  23. Elders Are “Giving Them Permission” • The role of men and women is God created (Gen. 2:18-25). • He restated it after the fall (Gen. 3:16-17). • It was creation not the fall (1 Tim. 2:11-14). • Preachers and elders are teaching women to get out of their roles • They misapply (Galatians 3:26-29). • The gospel is being discussed 2:14; 3:1; 8; 16. • Distinction exists – • She can’t be an elder 1 Timothy 3:1-5; Ephesians 6:1-2; 5:22 • Neither can many men

  24. Why Are Women Taking Over…? • Some disagree with God this is rebellion. God is not apologetic for his order of creation (Gen. 2:18; 22). • Lack of teaching and lack of modeling. Never seen it done right. • Lack of male leadership – no such thing as a leaderless home. • False teaching – some are giving them permission.
