  5. Why do we need to support kids to understand and expand on their ideas? Our own ideas are what we use to create/build our understanding of the rest of the world **This is how we become engaged with the rest of the world

  6. Supporting ideas in order to understand the world-Curiosity • When I have an idea, I test out my idea by exploring it in the context of the rest of the world • Ex. A child mixes yellow and blue paint and realizes that it makes green. She will continue to test this out as many times as she needs to until she “knows” that yellow and blue make green • Ex. An adolescent believes that he can do just about anything on his own. He will continue to act on his own until this proves to be false

Supporting ideas encourages communication-Motivation • When a child knows he has ideas and feels that they are valuable and important ideas, he is highly motivated to want to share them with others, to have others understand and value his ideas • Communication may take many forms. In addition to language, never overlook nonverbal communication-a glance, a smile, proximity to you-these all convey intent

Conveying that a child’s ideas are FABULOUS-relationships • We must be the people who convince children that their ideas are fabulous • We must oooh and ahhh and use all kinds of positive affect to let our children know that their ideas are the best ideas ever thought of in the history of time, no matter how simple the idea may be. This builds the foundation for all of the skills listed on the previous slides • It also builds the foundation for strong relationships between children and adults-our magic wand!!!

  9. Supporting ideas in order to understand others-Empathy When I have an idea, I want to compare it to the ideas of others in order to see if I am like them or unlike them When I understand my own ideas, I am better able to understand other people’s ideas

  10. Supporting ideas in order to support comprehension • When children are engaged, curious, motivated, related, and empathetic they better understand the world • Ex. The little girl who makes green can see why the mouse in her story wants to mix paints in order to create a different color • Ex. The adolescent who believes he can do everything on his own can relate to the character in his novel who has a hard time asking anyone for help (comprehension not memorization)

  11. Balancing the scales-Individual ideas versus harmony We MUST support children and their ideas We must also support caregivers and families to have balance between the individual and family needs

  12. What do you need? • In order to support your child to know that he has fabulous ideas and to help him expand those ideas, what do you need? • Time • Energy • Creativity • Validation

  13. When do you most enjoy engaging with your child? What is most satisfying for you? • What do you like to do with your children? • What do you like to do by yourself? • What activities do you find • satisfying? • restorative? • fun?

  14. How do we bring these two ideas together? • Build a bridge-activity • Brainstorm- • What ideas do your children have? • What do they love to do? Don’t prejudge, write down everything they love to do or could spend lots of time doing. • How can you build a bridge beginning with the child’s idea and moving slowly into one of your ideas? • Think about… • Adding complexity to the child’s ideas • Adding another sensory component to the child’s ideas

Some ideas my students gave me  • Pour liquid • Push buttons • Spin (myself or an object) • Play games • Nerf • Video games • Sports • Board games • Listen to music • Make music (sing) • Telling jokes (being silly) • Creative arts • Build • Blocks • Legos • Models • Cook • Gingerbread houses • Anything • Outings • Out to eat • Sports events • Movies • Concerts • Camping • Fishing

Try it • Complete the activity page • Use the resources in the library to help you get ideas • Come back and share with your small group • Challenge: • Try to add another sensory component to your idea • Smell, sight (or remove sight), tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, taste • Try to add another type of motor component to your idea • Try to add more complexity to your ideas

  19. Self-reflections • If you are having a difficult time joining the child in his ideas, why do you think that is? • Do you have someone to wonder with? WHEN IN DOUBT, HAVE MORE FUN!!!
