Safe haven scheme to save Red Squirrel • ByCharles Clover, Environment Editor • (Filed: 15/10/2001) • New scheme will ensure 'long-term survival' • "SAFE havens" to protect half the remaining red squirrel population in England were unveiled by conservationists yesterday. • Twenty-five potential refuges have been identified in Northumberland and Durham, areas with the highest number of squirrels. These have plentiful sources of food and could readily be defended against competing grey squirrels. • The total area identified amounts to 170,000 acres of conifer woods. It has been discovered that red squirrels prefer a mixture of Scots pine, Norway spruce and larch.
So far, the consent of landowners has been confirmed on only eight out of the potential sites. The rest are being proposed at a meeting today of conservation bodies, landowners, foresters and local authorities. • Red squirrels have declined to 160,000 in England, compared with 2.5 million greys and continue to be in danger, say conservationists. Jason Reynolds, of the project Red Alert North East, said: "It is only in the past few years that we have discovered the specific type of habitat where they have the best chance of survival." • Northumbrian Water Environmental Trust has given £125,000 to the project and English Nature £15,000. • Simon Lyster, director general of the Wildlife Trusts, said: "We are determined to ensure the red squirrel's long -term survival."
