Drop out after the second grade, and start workingat the Glass Factory.(9Y) • Statler decided to walk over to the McLure Hotel and earned the job of: the night-time bellboy. (13Y) • “By the age of 15, he had become the head bellboy at the McLure Hotel” • After four years of studying and researching these books on the hospitality industry, Statler, at the age of 19, obtained the title of “unofficial manager for the McLure Hotel.
Restaurant-1894 • In 1894 when he opened Statler's Restaurant in the new Ellicott Square Building in Buffalo. • Statler discovered the power of advertising. A series of newspaper ads and publicity stunts later, Statler's Restaurant was a resounding success.
Statler Hotels-1907 • one of the United States' early chains of hotels catering for traveling businessmen and tourists. It was founded by Statler in Buffalo, New York. • A Room and a Bath for a Dollar and a Half. • It being the first major hotel to have a private bath or shower and running water in every room. • 450 rooms
Hotel Statler -Boston • The Hotel Statler in Boston opens as the first hotel in the world to offer radio service in its guest rooms. • It is a two channel system with guest able to select the channel from a receiver and listen with either 2 headsets or radio loudspeaker. • The Boston hotel is the last hotel E.M. will build. E.M.'s empire includes hotels in Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, New York, Boston, and two in Buffalo.
“Hotel Man of the Half Century.” • “The guest is always right” • “Life is service.” • Donated over seven million dollars to Cornell’s hospitality program and he even gave out 600,000 dollars worth of scholarships to students who were enrolling in Hotel programs.
