February 28, 2011Do Now: What do all of the following movies have in common?
What is a Prequel? • What is a prequel? • A prequel is a story that supplements a previously written story. It fills in the details of what happened before. • Example: The popular film X-men Origins: Wolverine tells us how the character Wolverine came to be the angry, leather jacket wearing, memory-less mutant he was at the beginning of the first X-men movie.
And this has to do with us because… • Have you ever wondered what happened in OZ before Dorothy got there? • Ever wonder what Tom Riddle was like as a young child? • Did this thought ever cross your mind… What could possibly have happened to make the Montagues and Capulets hate each other SO much?
Get your writer’s caps on! Romeo and Juliet: The Prequel Written by….YOU! Congrats. You get to be the next Shakespeare!
You will be writing the story before the story… • ….what do you think happened long, long ago that lead to the two families hating each other and the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. • Did Marilyn Capulet once beat Annie Montague in a beauty contest? • Was the whole fight started over a tale of severe road rage? • Did Edward Capulet and Jacob Montague once fight over the same girl? • You get to decide!
Details • You can work with a partner or alone • You have to write a full story (beginning, middle, end) • You will create a picture book that tells your story • Should be between 6-10 pages • Have a picture on each page, can be hand drawn or from the computer BUT IT MUST BE GOOD QUALITY! • Have a thoughtful title and catchy cover
What you need to consider… • Who is in the story? • When did it take place? • What is the main conflict? • How is it resolved? • Does it connect to what happens with Romeo and Juliet?
So WHY are we doing this? 1. It brings together what we have covered so far this year… Plot Conflict Characters Inferences The Writing Process 2. It is a nice addition to our study of Romeo and Juliet 3. Most importantly…it can be fun! Be creative! Have a good time with it!
Today…BRAINSTORM • Decide your characters, your conflict, and your setting • Begin writing! Our week looks like this: Monday- Preparing and planning Tuesday-Writing Wednesday-Finish writing; begin creating book Thursday-Finish Book Friday – Share story with the class!
Honors: Yeah, yours is a little bit more challenging… • For your project, you have to include at least 3 different literary elements. Psst…look at our Word Wall if you forget what those are… So try your hand at irony or make your words soar with alliteration, personification, and metaphors… The choice is yours. Good luck!
