  5. 5.6 Unmet need for family planning Methodology RHS 1999 MICS3 2005 DHS 2007 Women who are sexually active, not pregnant, able to become pregnant, do not want to become pregnant, and are not using any contraceptive method are considered to have unmet need for contraception. Women who are sexually active (age 15-49), want to postpone their next birth or want to stop childbearing , and are not using any contraceptive method are considered to have unmet need for contraception. Currently married fecund women who want to postpone their next birth for two or more years or who want to stop childbearing altogether but are not using a contraceptive method are considered to have an unmet need for family planning. Pregnant women are considered to have an unmet need for spacing or limiting if their pregnancy was mistimed or unwanted. Similarly, amenorrheic women who are not using family planning and whose last birth was mistimed are considered to have an unmet need for spacing, and those whose last child was unwanted have an unmet need for limiting. Definition used by international agency for MDG Women with unmet need are those who are fecund and sexually active but are not using any method of contraception, and report not wanting any more children or wanting to delay the next child. The concept of unmet need points to the gap between women's reproductive intentions and their contraceptive behaviour. For MDG monitoring, unmet need is expressed as a percentage based on women who are married or in a consensual union.
