The truck accessory known as running boards, sidebar or step bars (and other names) may go by different names, but they do the same thing: They provide a safe and easy way to step into and out of your truck. They also give you a place to knock the mud off your boots, protect your truck from rock and gravel chips and make it easier to access the bed and roof of your truck. Nevertheless, there are a few major differences between all these products.

  3. APS Running Boards and Nerf Bars: What’s the Difference? Running boards run along the length of the cabin. They’re called “boards” because of their flat, rectangular shape. That makes them easier to mount closer to the truck for better protection and ground clearance and gives you more room to step up when loading things in the bed or on the roof. Nerf bars & sidebars are generally round or oval. They attach to the inside rocker panel of your truck or to the frame. Nerf bars have step areas on their bar with molded plastic step pads, unlike running boards which have a full length step pad along their entire length. Nerf bars and sidebars protrude farther and lower than running boards, making them easy to step on but can be vulnerable to damage when off-roading.

  4. Running Boards Vs Rock Sliders Although they look similar, nerf bars, and APS running boards shouldn't be confused with rock sliders. Rock sliders are a structural element attached to your truck's frame and built to protect the body of your vehicle from damage caused by sliding off rocks. Rock sliders are designed to protect a truck's body from damage when rock-crawling and off-roading. Since they need to support the weight of the vehicle, their construction is much more heavy-duty than nerf bars or running boards.

  5. Rock sliders are typically custom-fitted and specific to the vehicle make and model. They are very popular with Jeeps and off roaders. They can either be bolted or welded in place, and they provide a weight-bearing area for jack stands or a place to jack up the vehicle when changing a tire on bumpy ground. Rock sliders are positioned low on a vehicle’s body to increase ground clearance, and some models are also equipped with steps to serve as additional protection. While running boards, side steps, and nerf bars can help prevent minor rock damage to your truck, they should not be relied upon to prevent major body damage while off-roading.
