"All Quiet on the Western Front" is the story of Paul Baumer, a young German soldier serving in the trenches in France. • Baumer's story is not a pleasant one; he volunteered for the war when his instructor in school, Kantorek, urged the class to join up for the glory of Germany. After a rigorous period of military training (where Paul and his buddies meet the hated drill instructor Himmelstoss, a recurring character throughout the book), Baumer and his friends go to the front as infantrymen. Filled with glorious ideas about war by authority figures back home, Baumer quickly discovers that the blood-drenched trenches of the Western Front are a quagmire of misery and violent death. • As soon as the first shells explode in the mud Paul and his friends realize everyone back home is a liar, that war is not the glorious transformation of boys into men but rather the systematic destruction of all that is decent and healthy. As Paul's friends slip away one by one through death, desertion, and injury, Paul begins to wonder about his own life and whether he will survive not only the war but also a world without war.
All’s Quiet on the Western Front Requirements:All work must pass with a 75% or better. • Each chapter requires a set of answers to the given questions. • The answers need to be written in complete sentences (this means including the questions with in the answers). • Each chapter has vocabulary words that have three requirements. • Please read the directions on the vocabulary page. • There is a required activity to be done once the book is completed. • A Final is required to complete the book requirements. • Please note; all written materials must be done in Word, spell and grammar checked , written in complete sentences (including spelling definitions) and sent in electronically to your teacher. Please save your work frequently and save a copy for yourself.
Chapters 1 – 4 1. What was the time and place surrounding WWI? 2. Why was the food rationing doubled for each man in the second company? 3. Josef Behm was one of the last teenagers to sign up for the war. Explain his demise. 4. What significance did Franz’s death have on Paul? 5. What was the purpose behind Hemmelstoss’ beating? 6. On the front, where did the second company hide from the bombardment? 7. What was ironic about being saved from death this way? 8. What happened to the young recruit who “lost it” and cried in Paul’s arms at the beginning of the bombardment? 9. Why would the sound of animals in pain and agony bother the soldiers? 10. At the end of the bombardment, on the way back to the lorries, what was the behavior and feelings of the company?
Chapters 5 - 6 1. What bug was common place on the soldiers at the front and what did they do to rid themselves of them? 2. What were the private’s feelings toward their schooling once they had been moved to fight on the front? 3. The topic kept coming up about what they will do once they get out of the war. What were the conclusions? 4. At first, the rats were starving and were trying to find food. Later the rats were fat and satisfied. What happened? 5. Why did the soldiers find it ironic that right before they went out to fight they were given extremely good food and lots of it? 6. When going back to the front, there were lots of new caskets being built. 7. Who were they for? 8 . What did this do for the soldiers’ morale? 9. Why did the French bomb the German soldiers so heavily the first few days? 10. Why did the French bomb behind German soldiers? 11. Why did Hemmelstoss and the young recruits go crazy while in the manhole? 12. How did the soldiers feel when doing hand to hand combat?
Chapter 7 – 8 Write 5 questions from each chapter. The questions should be built around concepts you feel are important of why, how, what might happen in the future, etc. These are thinking questions that require a few sentences to answer. In a different color font, write the answers to the questions in complete sentences.
Chapters 9 – 12 1. Paul and his friends begin to contemplate the war and how it got started. Discuss some of the thoughts of their discussion and how it gets resolved. 2. Explain what happens to soldiers when mortar hits, why do you think this happens? 3. What are Paul’s thoughts once he kills the French soldier and found out his identity? 4. How do Albert and Paul end up on the train for home? 5. In the hospital, there is a room called the Dying Room. What is its purpose? 6. Who conquers its power? 7. What happened to Albert’s leg? 8. What does Paul mean when he talks about living on the shoulders of death? 9. Describe this behavior. 10. How do the soldiers feel about the hospital surgeons? 11. How did Kat die? 12. Why did the author name the book “All’s Quiet on the Western Front”?
