Dean’s List 11 Habits of Highly Effective Students
Facing Freshman Year • Professors aren’t “teachers” for a reason: learning YOUR job! • Do the math: 65% of college academic work is done OUTSIDE of the classroom • Get involved!
Habit #1: Focus on Learning, Not the Grades • Don’t memorize facts just for the test, then forget them. • Learn from the feedback: even if you receive an A on a paper, look to see what can be improved. • Make connections between material and classes: think critically!
Habit #2: Build an Adult Relationship with Your Parents • This is YOUR college experience. • Set expectations for the relationship.
Habit #3: Work the System by Understanding the System • Know the “right who” to go to for help. • What can a TA do? • Find a mentor that makes sense. • Get to know your professors.
Habit #4: Approach the Curriculum like a Great Feast • Have the right attitude about class/assignments. • Ask the right questions. • Where are you trying to go? • What skills do you need (and want)? • Take part of as many opportunities as you can.
Habit #5: Understand the Majors and Careers are NOT the Same Thing • Choosing a major is the biggest decision of your academic life, but it will not affect your career forever. • The importance of your major isn’t just about the knowledge gained, but also, your ability to manipulate that knowledge. • Don’t just live with your choice-love it!
Habit #6: Don’t Just Work Hard-Work Smart • Be strategic: Choose study habits that suit your learning style. • Don’t reinvent the wheel. • Have a plan • Set goals • Manage your time • In lecture: • Read before, so information is familiar • Take notes on dates, key words and repeated concepts
Habit #7: Build Integrity to Get Your Desired Future • Become distinct with knowledge and experience. • Be honest. • Be yourself.
Habit #8: Learn from Diversity • Challenge your worldview. • Start a conversation. • Study abroad. • Gain new experiences.
Habit #9: When You are Failing, Understand Why • Lack of motivation • Poor time management • Weak study skills and/or talent • Poor mental and/or physical health
Habit #10: Cope with Failure by Rebuilding and Forgiving • Identify the problem • Find the best solution for you • Have a plan
Habit #11: Plan Boldly for Life after College • Internships • Community Service • Organization Involvement • Graduate School • Make Your Own Way!
Themes of the 11 Habits • Find the right fit • Have a good support system • Have a plan • Gain the skills to be transferrable • Study for learning not memorization
Next Workshop • Value of Involvement and Time Management • Wednesday, October 12th • 6-7pm • University Center, Tejas B
