Slow Down! Intermediate Class The Warehouse Madrid
Take work home • I hate doing it but I often take work home with me. I try not to but every now and again there’s that thing you should have done at the office but you didn’t do.
Have time to relax • Cindy: Do you have time to relax on the weekends? • Mark: Hardly. I have to drop the kids off at swim lessons then I have to pick my wife up from yoga. I’m a taxi all day long! • Cindy: You should make sure to make a little time for yourself. • Mark: I should, but when do I have time to make time for myself? haha
Work long hours • John is a lawyer at a prestigious law firm in New York. He works long hours, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Sunday is his only day off. If he keeps this up, he’s going to crack one of these days!
Work overtime • John: My boss asked me to work overtime again. • Cindy: Again? You had to work overtime last week! • John: I know, but this time the boss promised to pay me my usual time and a half plus a Christmas bonus if I help him make it through the holiday season. • Cindy: Well, I hope it’s worth it. You work overtime for that man like it was your job! • John: Well, it kind of is! haha
Be a workaholic • My friend Susie is a workaholic. She works all week and even on the weekends. We try to tell her to take time for herself but she doesn’t listen. I think she’s a masochist!
Meet deadlines • Jim: My boss warned me that if I don’t meet this next deadline, we won’t be able to get the issue out on time and he could fire me for it. • Johnny: But your boss never meets his own deadlines! • Jim: I know, but I guess that’s why he’s the boss.
Take time off work • Jenny: I’d like to take some time off work next week if that’s OK, Mr. Michelson. • Mr. Michelson: That’s fine Jennie, just clear it with HR before you leave today. • Jenny: Will do sir.
Under pressure at work • John: I’m under pressure at work to make a big sale this week. If I don’t make some money, we’ll be in the red after this month. • Jerry: Wow, I’m so sorry. • John: Yeah well, I hope things get better soon. I’m so stressed!
Spend a lot of time at work • Jenny: How much time do you spend at work? • Mark: Probably about 50 hours a week. • Jenny: I spend about 40 hours a week. I try not to work more than 40 hours. • Mark: Lucky you! I wish that I spent less time at work!
Have good working conditions • John: Do you have good working conditions, Jen? • Jen: The best! My office has a fitness center, a cafeteria, even a psychologist if we need to talk to someone! The best part though is that when we’re tired we can go home! What’s the point of staying at work if you aren’t productive! • John: Wow! Those are good working conditions!
