(4.4) Ionic and covalent bonds Solubility lab
Objectives • Students will know and be able to: • Determine characteristics of ionic compounds • Recall compounds that exhibit ionic bonding are soluble • Determine the difference between ionic and covalent bonds • Define soluble and insoluble • Complete a lab on solubility
Ionic and covalent bonds • Remember that Ionic bonds are always formed between • a metals (group 1 and 2) and a nonmetals (group 15, 16, and 17). • By contrast Covalent bonds are generally formed between two nonmetals (group 15, 16, 17).
What’s the difference? Ionic: Dissolve in Water Covalent: Don’t dissolve in Water Put them in water and see if it dissolves. Ionic: Don’t Melt in a flame Covalent: Melt easily in a flame Heat them and see if it melts. Ionic: Solid at Room Temp Covalent: Solid, Liquid or Gas at Room temp Look at them and see if it’s a Liquid or Gas.
The Lab • Instructions: In this lab, you will determine whether or not each of the following compounds are ionic. Recall that compounds that exhibit ionic bonding are soluble (dissolve in) in water. • Experiment: • For each of the following, place a small amount of the compound in a test tube. • Add water to the test tube and record your observations. • If it is soluble (dissolves in water) than it is most likely ionic. • If it is insoluble (doesn’t dissolve in water) than it is most likely covalent
