Gray whale migration path • In mid December the gray whales migrate south from the Bering and Chukchi seas. • They travel at least 100 miles a day they can travel from Unimak Pass in Alaska to Baja California in an average of 55 days. • On the trip down, these giant mammals head South on a direct course, move quickly, and mostly stay about 5 miles offshore. At their peak, about 30 whales pass by each hour.

Gray whales predators • On the migration path, some predators that will try to kill the gray whales are sharks, orca, and any other large, and fast oceanic carnivores. • They also have to fear humans. • Humans have hunted the gray whales for millennia. Killing them along the coast during their migration.

  4. Gray whales prey • Gray whales feed on small crustaceans such as amphipods, and tube worms found in bottom sediments. They feed primarily in the summer months of long daylight hours in the cold arctic waters of the Bering and Chukchi seas. A whale swallows at least 70 metric tons of food during that time. They may eat a ton a day of shrimplike amphipods.

  6. Where Do Gray Whales Live • Some Gray whales live in the waters near Japan, and china • Others live in the oceans near Alaska and north eastern Russia. • Some live along the migration path down into Baja California.
