Information about me • This is my eighth year teaching • I am a product of Training Wheels preschool, the MYDC after-school and summer programs • Point Park’s graduate program for a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I will be done in December • I have been married for five years, to my loving husband Tommie • I have two wonderful children. Mikai, is a third grader at MACS and my daughter, Trysten, will be attending Training Wheels.
Rules • Respect others and their property • Treat others as you treat yourself • Come to class ready to learn and leaving all negative attitudes at the door • Be responsible for your own learning and be on task so that you don’t disrupt others • Try your best
consequences • Three verbal warnings • Sent to partner teacher; problem solving sheet • If sent out of class twice in a day, after-school detention and a phone call or email home • If you are sent out three times in one week you are referred to PBS
Rewards- individual • You earn points which may be used to purchase or earn • Homework pass • Items from class store • Class work pass • Radio requests • MACS bucks Students can earn points by turning in homework on time, receiving As or Bs on quizzes, tests, or projects, finishing a personal book choice and not having their names on the board for individual periods. Students can also use their points to replace used, lost or forgotten materials like pencils, papers.
Rewards- Class • The class will be working towards a certain amount of points in order to attend the special event. You will be competing against the other grades. These competitions last for the entire report period. The class with the most points will be able to chose: 1. Lunch with the teacher or from the teacher 2. Game Day 3. Sherbert or Yogurt party 4. Movie day 5. Class choice (vote)
Expectations • That you are on task • That you are prepared with books, writing utensils and notebooks • Keep your notebook neat • Complete homework • Students to stay in seats while notes and lessons are being discussed • To complete all tasks on contract • To read every night at home • To read daily in class
Procedures for class • When you come into class, you will put your homework on the corner of desk and begin writing in your journal • Journal topics will be on the board or there will be a written piece that I will share to inspire your journals. You may choose to write about the topic or express any feelings or situations that are going on in your life. • Journals will be done on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
Procedure cont. • Next we will begin working on the notes for the mini lesson • ***Organize notebooks • After we go over the mini lesson, you will have time to work on your writing pieces. This is where you will complete your pages of writing that are required on your contract.
Procedure cont. • During reading we will start the class with the minilesson. You will take notes in your Reader’s Notebook • Set up the reader’s notebook • Read Aloud/Shared reading using the strategy taught on the class novel • Some days the class novel will be read solely by the teacher, other days will require paired reading and silent reading.
Homework • You will read in your personal book every night during the week and read your classroom novel over the weekend • You will have topics to respond to based on your personal book • Most nights you will write in your Writer’s notebooks creating more rough drafts or editing finished papers. • Some nights you will have grammar homework related to the minilesson. • Spelling homework will be once a week.

Blog • Everyone will have their own email at gaggle.net • This site is monitored by the teacher and any inappropriate speech will result in the student’s computer privileges being revoked • Your username will be your first name, period and last name • Example: Phylissa.Thomas • Your password until you change it will be: thomas
Grades • You must create a book project for at least two books during the report period • One book project will be completed based on the shared classroom novel • You must submit three written pieces to be graded • One written piece will be determined by the teacher for all students to complete for a grade • There may be a test for the end of the class room novels
Personal book • Every student is to have a personal book at all times • You may chose a book from home, my library, the school’s library, Carnegie library, the book store, a friend or many other methods, but you must always have it with you. • This is your chance to chose the types of books that you would be into to read. Chose wisely because you will be writing about these books as well
