Job Duties & Responsibilities • Recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues • Hazardous-waste management studies • Evaluate the significance of hazards • Offer analysis on treatment and containment • Develop regulations to prevent mishaps • Design municipal water supply • Conduct research on proposed environmental projects • Analyze scientific data • Perform quality control checks • Research experiments and record results daily

Qualities and Skills • An environmental engineer needs to have scientific and mathematic skills • Needs to be a logical thinker and a problem solver • Communication Skills (verbal and nonverbal) as well as computer skills are needed • The ability to present ideas and solutions to a large group is an asset to the success of this career

  4. Salary • Median annual earnings of environmental engineers was $61,410 in 2002 • The middle 50% earned between $47,650 and $77,360 • The lowest 10% earned less than $38,640, and the highest 10% earned more than $91,510 • Employees with the state government earned about $54,160 per year

  5. Work Environment • Outdoor and indoor work is required • Laboratory work and equipment handling is a must • Long hours may be required to met deadlines • Weekend and holiday work may be required

  6. Education • The minimum education for a career in the environmental engineering field is usually a master’s degree for an entry-level position. • A Ph.D. is not required but is strongly recommended for this field. • A Ph.D. is required if you plan on becoming a person in a management or supervisory position.
