Promised Land • Prefigures Heaven • Israelites had to fight and suffer to get it • Christians can’t enter heaven, the true Promised Land, unless they fight enemies of their salvation (sin)
Renewal of the Covenant • Circumcision
Battle of Jericho • March silently around Jericho once a day for 6 days. • The 7th day, march around 7 times. Priests blow horns, people shout and the walls fall down
Ban • When entire cities are ordered to be wiped out
Book of Judges • Cycle of Idolatry (sin) and repentance
Judges • Temporary leaders appointed by God to lead the people of Israel when enemies oppressed them before they had kings • “Soldier-prophets”
Deborah • Female Judge who helped Barak lead the Israelite army and defeated the Canaanites
Barak – is told by Deborah that God wants him to lead an army against: • Jabin - the Canaanite king • Sisera – General of Jaban’s army • Deborah tells Barak that he will win, but Barak wants Deborah to go with him. If she does, he will not get the glory, it will go to a woman.
Gideon • Judge that put fleece on the ground to test God • Fought the Midianites and won
Samson • Strong judge whose strength was in his hair (obedience to God) • Broke vow and lost strength
Ruth • Left home and family in Moab to go with Naomi to Bethlehem • Enters the bloodline of Jesus • “Your people will be my people, your God will be my God.”

The Book of Ruth • Emphasizes that Holiness and salvation are not just for the Jews, but for all
Samuel • Last Judge of Israel (prophet)

Why Israel wanted a king • To be like other nations • For unity

David and Goliath • David’s victory over Goliath-a type of every Christian’s ultimate victory over evil. • David’s life prefigures the coming of the true shepherd
