Skincare in winter • During the winter, Ayurveda recognises an energy known as Vata Dosha. Vata Dosha is made up of the space and air elements and in the winter that energy (dry and rough.) is increased in the atmosphere. There by having an influence on the skin. • In the winter, the wind is very cold. When this cold wind touches the skin, it causes vaso - constriction to maintain the temperature of the body, which means that the temperature present inside the body is not conducted or passed out of the body. • During winter skin cannot replenish its moisture naturally due to less humidity in air. Low humidity due to indoor heating, hot showers and bath exaggerates this condition and skin is bound to become dry and irritated. Dry skin tends to crack and bleed. Cracked skin increases the risk of infection. The best ways to keep the skin soft, healthy and moisturized are, • Quick three minutes’ bath is advisable and Avoid long hot showers. • 20 to 30 minutes of yoga daily can give your skin a healthy glow • Ayurveda stresses on ABHYANGAM (massaging body with oil) during winter • Ayurvedic oil massage reduces harshness of VATA or dryness of the skin by providing moisture to the skin. ABHYANGAM; • It is an application of herbal oils which settles VATA, (dryness of the skin) enhances the strength and suppleness of the skin. Special care for face • Avoid repeated washing of face. This washes off natural oils from our skin and makes the skin dry, scaly and wrinkled. Use luke warm water instead of hot water to wash face. Apply herbal moisturizer lotion if you feel dryness on skin.
Home remedies • 1 tsp. of lemon and avocado is mixed well and applied is good for dry skin. • Half tbsp. of honey when mixed with 1 tbsp. of rose water applied and washed on just before drying can tone ones skin. • 1 egg yolk, half tsp. of milk powder, and honey is good for dry skin and it has to be applied for 10 to 15 minutes and washed with cold water. • Cucumber and cream of milk when mixed and applied is good for dry skin in winters.

Its aphrodisiac, stimulant, expectorant.it is useful in bronchitis, cardiac diseases, halitosis, nausea and vomiting.it helps in restoring normal skin colour. It has an anti-clotting effect on the blood. Therapeutic uses: Reduces abdominal distension, mouth refreshing and relishing. Studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. Several studies suggest that cinnamon may have a regulatory effect on blood sugar, making it especially beneficial for people with Type 2 diabetes. One study found that smelling cinnamon boosts cognitive function and memory. It is a great source of manganese, fibre, iron, and calcium.
Veerabhadrasana (Warrior pose) Stand with your feet 3-4 feet apart. Take deep breaths in and out. Breathe in and raise the arms sideways in line with the shoulders, palms facing downwards. Turn the right foot sideways 90 degrees to the right, keeping the left leg stretched out and tightened at the knee. Exhale and bend the right knee till the right thigh is parallel to the floor, keeping the right shin perpendicular to the floor. Stretch the hands sideways Turn the face to the right and gaze at the right palm. Stay in the pose with normal breathing for 20 sec to 30 sec. Breathing in, come up and breathing out bring the arms down slowly Repeat on the other side .

Procedure Sauté the spices (cardamom, bay leaf, coriander, cumin seeds ) in olive oil. Add onion and sauté till they become golden brown. Add sliced apple, carrot. Stir in the vegetable stock and simmer it for 45 mins, covered. At the end stir with the fresh orange juice, add salt and freshly grounded black pepper.
