Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Build The Unit • Always remember to be clean when building the CCR • Wash hands, work on a clean surface • Don’t let anyone cough or sneeze on exposed parts • It is prudent to wear a dust mask and gloves when • filling and cleaning the scrubber • After the scrubber is installed make sure the DSV is • closed to protect the sorb from the atmosphere • Be aware that sorb may cause bleaching of materials it • comes in contact with
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Analyze • Always analyze diluent and oxygen supply cylinders, your life depends on this check
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Analyze • When filling the O2 cylinder, blow out the fill whip with O2 before attaching to the cylinder to ensure that only pure O2 enters the bottle (small cylinder, this may make a difference over time) • Check supply cylinder pressures, always start with at least 1500 psi* (depends on cylinder size) • Decide on required OC bail out gas, analyze and prepare bottles
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Scrubber Packing • Critical to complete correctly, improper packing may lead to CO2 toxicity through “channeling” • Axial flow design is fairly resistant to channeling at a cost of slightly higher breathing resistance as compared to radial designs • Clean out scrubber, and inspect for damage • Pour 4-8 grade sorb into scrubber, best to have a slight breeze to help prevent dust
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Scrubber Packing • Fill 1/3 then GENTLY tap sides with hands • Fill 2/3 tap again • Fill 3/3 Tap again • About 6lbs of sorb (3 hr life) DO NOT OVERFILL
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Scrubber Packing • Check O-rings are clean and apply a light lubrication and insert into head • Tighten centre bolt down (GENTLY!!) • If it is a rough ride to the site check to make sure no settling has occurred in scrubber stack • Always start with new sorb for deep dives
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Build the Unit • Attach analyzed supply cylinders • Attach wing and back plate/harness • KISS was designed to accept any back-plate / harness system as long as it has two mounting grommets (comfortable with) • It is best to use a smaller lift wing
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Sensor Calibration • Switch on the PO2 displays (magnetic switch) calibrate • only if necessary • Calibrate with air (can take scrubber off and then calibrate • with ambient air) or • Open DSV and breath in through mouth and out through • nose until the breathing loop in empty • Then fill loop with air • Again breath loop dry, and fill with air • Do this 3 times • Check PO2 display (slow PO2 changes may indicate • condensation on the sensor) • Should read 0.210 atm
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Sensor Calibration • Now check for linearity of the sensors • use oxygen to fill the loop (scrubber in • place) • Purge the loop three times with oxygen • All three sensors should now read • about 0.999 atm • Ensure last decimal point is moving • (changing) • Watch to see all three displays are • reacting at the same rate
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Build the Unit • Ensure correct routing of O2 manual addition valve, SPGs, BC power inflator, and dry suit inflator • Use diluent supply for BCD / dry suit inflation • Alternately use bailout or a completely separate supply for dry suit inflation
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification: gas flow • Remove inhalation / exhalation hoses, from the DSV, and check the one way valves • Put inhalation side of DSV in your mouth, suck in, there should be no air allowed in. Now blow out, air should be able to move forward
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification: gas flow • Put exhalation side of the DSV in your mouth, suck in, air should be moving. Now blow out, no air should be allowed to move • If any of these tests fail, check / replace one-way valve flappers
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification • Replace breathing hoses onto DSV do stereo-check • Replace breathing hoses onto KISS, ensure DSV is on the right way • Replace counterlungs • Attach OC bail out supply hose to the DSV OC regulator
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification: Negative Pressure • Negative loop pressure test: (cylinders off) • Suck loop dry (inhale through mouth and exhale through nose), close DSV, leave for 5 minutes • Open DSV, you should hear air “whooshing” into the loop
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification: Positive Pressure • Positive loop pressure test: (cylinders off,OPRV Closed) • Fill loop until automatic dump is activated close DSV • Submerge in water, look for bubbles • Or if submersion is impossible, fill loop close DSV • leave for 10 minutes, check for gas loss by firmness • of lungs, and hose location
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification: OPRV & ADV • Turn on the diluent supply tank • Turn DSV to OC test regulator • Turn DSV to CC test function • Test Over pressure relief valve (OPRV): • Breath in through nose, and out into loop through your mouth • Continue until relief valve releases gas • Test ADV: • Suck loop dry, by breathing in through mouth and out through nose, ADV should be activated
Chapter 4b: KISS Classic Unit Verification: Setting the OPRV • Should be adjusted to diver preference • Open (or looser) as this allows the expanding gas to vent easily on ascents. But by having the OPRV open the gas in the loop may vent inadvertently depending on diver orientation in the water and loop volume. • Closed (or tighter), this will reduce gas escaping for the loop. Unfortunately this can lead to over expansion injuries if the diver does not vent the expanding gas from the loop through their nose.
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Unit Verification • Ensure mouth piece tie wrap is secure • While doing positive pressure test in water, also check all fittings, HP hoses, 1st stages for leaks • Open oxygen supply cylinder (carefully), verify flow of oxygen into loop, then test manual addition, verify O2 is being added • Close oxygen supply cylinder until ready to dive.
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Adjusting Oxygen Flow Rate • KISS CCR is a manual rebreather • The PO2 is maintained by a constant flow of mass of O2 into the loop & user additions • This flow is set by the factory but can be adjusted by the diver if needed by adjusting the IP of the O2 regulator first stage (to allow 0.6-1 L/min of O2) • The flow must be slightly less than the divers metabolic need for O2 • If it is more (i.e. a flow of 0.8 L/min, when the diver uses 0.7 L/min) the PO2 will constantly climb, a very unsafe practice
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Pre-Dive Breathing the Loop • Before the dive, open the oxygen supply and diluent supply • Breath loop on surface for few minutes • (Time depends on temperature) • Avoid gas / diesel exhaust fumes • This allows the scrubber to “warm” up and start the chemical reaction • Check manual O2 addition increases PO2 • Check diluent addition decreases PO2 • Check OC bailout switch is operational • Bring the PO2 to desired set point (ex. 0.7 atm)
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Pre-Dive Breathing the Loop • Once all the checks are complete and the loop is at the desired set-point it is best to not take the DSV out of your mouth to talk • Doing so will change the PO2 set-point and require adjustment again
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC In Water Check • Just like the bubble check of OC • At about 20 fsw (6 msw), stop and check your buddy’s KISS for any bubbles, and vice versa • Any sign of bubbles from the loop will need to be fixed before the dive can continue • In OC a gas leak will usually not result in flooding the system as the gas pressure is higher than ambient pressure • In CCR the loop is at ambient pressure and any bubbles coming out will mean water is allowed to enter the loop resulting in a flood
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Post-Dive Procedures • If you are to do multiple dives • Mark time usage on scrubber • Mark the time usage on the batteries in the log • KISS uses Duracell PX28L 6 volt (or equivalent) • They will last 20 hours with the back light function enabled • The back light will then go out, the batteries will now last up to 20 hours • When the backlight goes out replace the batteries • Low batteries will cause false high PO2 readings possibly leading to hypoxia and DCS. • Be very careful not to pinch the o-ring and DO NOT over tighten the screws (older displays only)
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Post-Dive Procedures • Keep the unit upright, to prevent water/condensation from contaminating the O2 sensors • If possible remove the scrubber (and cover the scrubber) to allow condensation on sensors to dry • Drain the exhalation hose
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Post-Day Procedures • See Appendix F. for disinfectant solutions • Wash exterior of unit • Remove back plate and wing • Remove counterlungs and disinfect • Remove breathing hoses and DSV, disinfect • Discard sorb (if needed) and clean scrubber with fresh water • Clean and re-lube O-rings (with O2 compatible lube) • Fill diluent and O2 supply cylinders
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Disinfection Procedures • Rinse component with fresh water • Place in a tub of disinfection solution or use a spray bottle and spray the component • Let soak for a few minutes • Rinse with fresh water • Let air dry (avoid UV light exposure) • Do not pack away wet • If scrubber is still usable, seal it in an airtight bag, date and mark the usage • If the scrubber is used up, dispose of the sorb carefully avoiding contact • Wash hands well after cleaning the scrubber
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Storage • Remove batteries • Store without the O-rings in place (protect o-rings) • Supply cylinders at 200 psi • Store in a dry cool place without anything lying on top of any part of the CCR • Sorb needs to be always treated with great care • Do not agitate • Do not keep in hot or cold places • Keep tightly sealed • Freezing results in uneven moisture content • Over heating results in moisture loss • Both dramatically decrease scrubber performance
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Maintenance • All of the post-day procedures • Check log on O2 sensor life • Sensors last 12-24 months • (best to change yearly) • Sensors last longest in dry, cool 50-70 F • (5-25 C), air environment • VIP cylinders every year • Hydro cylinders every 5 years • Service regulators every year • Store in cool dry place with O-rings out and • stored in a safe place • Every two years (or sooner if needed) replace • all O-rings and mushroom valves • Every few years (or sooner if needed) replace • breathing hoses
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Log Book • Diver Log book • KISS CCR log book
Chapter 4: KISS CLASSIC Travel • Protect sorb from heat / cold, UV light, • and agitation • Protect CCR components from UV light, • cover with a towel between dives • Protect CCR components from crushing • damage, store in a hard case • Secure CCR in an upright position during • the diving day • Carry a copy of the MSDS (Material • Safety Data Sheet) for the sorb you are • using
