Living Conditions • Slums were a result of population growth and outbreaks of Cholera hurt the public
Raw Sewage • Went into the Thames waterways • Polluted the water
River Thames • As population increased the river declined and became even worse • Thousands died of Cholera from the river
Great Stink • Also called the Big Stink and was in the summer of 1858 • River Thames overflew with sewage and was a hot summer • People would use defecate into a pot and would throw it out of the window onto the street
Who were the Londoners • Hard working laborers who were primarily: • Food industry workers • Textile industry workers • Merchants Workers sorting Out seed in a factory
Why and where did they come to London Came from: - China - Ireland - Southern Asia - Russia
Areas of London • Soho was a major center for people, unfortunately this also brought a huge Cholera outbreak • Cheapside was full of markets and lower class people
London Landmarks and Monuments • Trafalgar Square • Big ben and the houses of parliament • Royal Albert hall
London Portrayal Called London a magic lantern. The city played a more important role than the characters themselves did.
London Fog • Killed up to 10,000 people • Air became visible • Lips turned blue
