  2. What is a storage device? • Provide a place to save your work • RAM • Way to give stuff to others • Place for programs and data

  3. Types of storage devices • Floppy disk (Removable) • Hard disk (Fixed) • CD-ROM • Large Capacity Removable Storage (ZIP Drives)

  4. Floppy disk drive • Come in two sizes • 5.25” and 3.5” • Preference today is 3.5” • Used to load software • Exchange work with others • Secure way to save stuff

  5. Hard disk drive • Large internal storage • Where programs are loaded • Sizes start about 850MB and go up • Do NOT skimp on size

  6. Determining size • Carefully check size requirements for the desired software • Most Windows programs take about 30MB to load • Windows ‘95 takes between 40 and 80 MB • Don’t forget to leave space for data

  7. CD-ROM • Holds large amounts of data (650MB) • Disks are Read Only (ROM) • Used in place of diskettes to load software • Used for games and programs • Used for multi-media applications • Almost all new computers have them

  8. Large Capacity Removable • Iomega ZIP Drives (100 MB on a single cartridge • Inexpensive • $149 for the drive • $20 per disk • REMOVABLE
