  1. “Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God”. (Matthew 5:8)

  2. “Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God”. (Matthew 5:8)

  3. What do you think purity of heart means? “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.” (Psalm 24:3-4) “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8) Purity of heart is associated with right action - cleanliness of hands – and right mindedness - a singularity of worship of God.

  4. The heart, the core of who we are, is fractured, misleading and in need of significant repair. • “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9

  5. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”. (Proverbs 4:23) • Right-heartedness leads to right action. • Purity of heart refers to the possession of an undivided heart, a mind that is firmly and solely fixed upon Jesus. Purity of heart lies behind right thinking.

  6. How does one’s heart become pure? How can one become both clean-handed and single-minded? • There are but two real possibilities here: it occurs either by human effort or by divine intervention.

  7. Our hearts are so deceitfully evil that we are convinced that if we just clean up our external actions and thoughts, then certainly we’ll attain purity of heart as a by-product. But Jesus revealing that a focus on an external scrubbing only ensures that all kinds of evil fester on the inside.

  8. “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart”. (Proverbs 17:3) Jesus promises to “sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify [us] and refine [us] like gold and silver.” (Malachi 3:2-3)

  9. Might we all eventually be able to request the following of God: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:10), “give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” (Psalm 86:11).

  10. Seeing God means: • admittance into His presence. • experiencing a relational engagement with Him • constantly being witness to the transformative power of God’s presence and on an ongoing basis being witness to transformational purification; the unclean becoming clean.

  11. “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” (1 John 4:12) • “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.” (1 Peter 1:22) • From a pure heart, we can, with a selfless love, love one another as we see God’s glory at work around us.

  12. Might we today experience a purifying of our hearts, so that we might better see God. Might His transformative purity change us so that we might love each other and others in our community more fully.
