  8. A Day at Hayes • 9 Periods • 7 class periods & 2 periods of Lunch/ House • School Hours are: 7:25 – 2:30

House • What is House? • “Teams” of students • Middle of day before or after lunch • Presentations, Announcements, Grade Checks, Academic intervention, School wide projects & fun competitions • Freshmen will be placed into houses randomly (unless they have siblings at Hayes), they will know their House at schedule pick up.

  10. Graduation Core Requirements • English 4 credits • Math 4 credits • Science 3 credits • Social Studies 3 credits • Health ½ credit • Physical Educ. ½ credit or 2 PE Waivers • Fine Arts 1 credit • Electives 5 credits or 5.5 if waivers used • 21 Total

  11. Physical Education Waiver Two COMPLETED Seasons of: OHSAA Sponsored Sport Or Two COMPLETED Years of: Marching Band or AFJROTC You may NOTcombine one PE course and one waiver. Sports may be combined or skipped years. Waivers will be automatically added to transcripts.

  12. Study Hall • Students may choose to take a traditional Study Hall. • There is no credit value awarded to a Study Hall. • All 9th Grade Students are encouraged to take a Study Hall in addition to House in order to help them successfully transition to Hayes High School.

  14. Graduation Requirements • End of Course Exams • Earn a cumulative passing score on seven end-of-course exams: • English 9, English 10, Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, U.S. History, Government OR • Industry Credentials & Passing WorkKeys Score OR • Qualifying Score on College Admission Test

  15. GPA RankingGPA SCALE HAS CHANGED BEGINNING WITH THE CLASS OF 2014 • Course grades are based on + / - scale. • AP Courses and College Credit Plus are weighted 1 point for grades C- or above.

  16. Graduation With Honors • 5 Different Types of Honors Diplomas: • Academic • Career Technical • STEM • Social Science and Civic Engagement • Arts *More details can be found on our website.

  17. Eligibility for Sports/Activities • 1.5 GPA for the quarter preceding season • Must be passing 5 courses (PE does not count toward the 5 courses) • Fall sports eligibility will be dependent on the 4th quarter of 8th grade year • Winter sports eligibility is based upon 1st and 2nd quarters.

  18. Eligibility - 5 Class Rule • OHSAA requires students to be passing (with a D- or higher) 5classes in a semester • The 5 Class Rule is in addition to the Hayes GPA requirement.

  19. Drop Policy • If students drop courses after the first two weeks of the class starting, they will be issued a “W” for dropping the course. • Students may only drop a course with a “W” ONE time during their high school career. • A “W” does not affect GPA. • All courses dropped after this option is used, will result in an “F” for the final grade. This will be entered on the transcript and willaffect the GPA.

PowerSchool Registration • Fill out Course Selection Sheet • Enter requests into PowerSchool portal • Online portal opens Monday, January 28th! • Instructions for entering requests into PowerSchool are included in your student’s materials – can also be found on our website • Must be complete by Thursday, January 31st.

Power School Registration • Study Hall and PE Classes that are desired to be taken all year will only be able to be chosen once in PowerSchool – student will need to notify Mrs. Smith (at our one-on-one meetings) if they wish to double up, and counselor can add 2nd study hall or PE in PowerSchool.

Aerospace & Leadership Elective CoursesOffered by Delaware County Air Force Junior ROTC at Hayes • SO WHAT IS IT REALLY?? • What we are NOT!: • NOT Military Recruiters – You’re NOT required to join Military Service • NOT Directly connected to College-Level ROTC • NOT Influencing Students to Join Military • NOT just for people with Military Interests – It’s for everyone! • What we ARE!: • Electives in Aviation, Space, Global Issues, Survival Skills, Citizenship, Character, Leadership, Team-Building, Healthy Lifestyles, College and Career Planning • Knowledge and Values for success in ANY job, ANY career, civilian or military • Friends, Field Trips, Banquets, Picnics, Sports Days, Military Ball; FUN! • Voluntary Extracurricular Activities: Interscholastic Competition Drill Team; Rocket Club; Non-Firearm Air Rifle Pellet Marksmanship Team, Summer Leadership School, Community Service • Qualifies for the Physical Education Waiver

Course Applications Due by Thursday, January 31st • Honors English 9, World Studies 9, or Humanities 9 • Difference between Honors and Humanities • No GPA boost for either • If student is recommended for one Honors and one Humanities, they can choose • St. Mary’s and Grace Comm. Students – ignore deadline, teachers @ current school can sign • Spanish 1 or French 1 • No application for Spanish 2 or French 2 All applications can be found on our website

Dates to Remember • Course request forms & applications are due to Mrs. Klein byJanuary 31st • Requests entered into PowerSchool by January 31st • Mrs. Smith will be at Dempsey February 4th -15thto review requests one-on-one with students during their Social Studies classes. Dates are available on Canvas.

  40. Changes to Schedule Requests • Any requests to change course selections must be submitted to your school counselor no later than May 29th at 3 PM.

Overview of Steps (for Dempsey Students) • Fill out Scheduling Request form • Go to PowerSchool account to add requests – Registration Opens • Fill out any applications you need • Upcoming 9th Graders: Turn in request forms and applications to Mrs. Klein by Jan 31st. • Meet with Mrs. Smith in February to finalize requests.
