  1. DINGMANS CREEK DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA NATIONAL PARK SERVICE STREAM DAMAGED DURING BIG RAIN IN JUNE 20053 PROJECTS VEGETATED July 22-24, 2008

  2. DINGMANS CREEKLET’S VEGETATE THE MEGA-SLIDE SITE

  3. THE PLAN • For approximately 400 ft Dingmans Creek had been flowing against the left valley wall (estimated height 100 ft). The amount of fine sediment delivered to the stream was monumental. • This project is designed to increase roughness on the left bank floodplain using Large Woody Debris (LWD) & vegetation. This increased roughness would decrease the likelihood of the stream jumping back (avulsion) into the former channel. • Plantings of 20+ species of trees & shrubs on both banks will result in a continuous riparian corridor on both sides of the stream & will increase bank stability.

  7. Looking US @ a vegetated section of the Mega-slide, worth imitating. Note wood jam at bend in stream (foreground) PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  8. From right bank, looking at Mega-slide. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  9. Looking DS @ Mega-slide. Area will be densely planted. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  10. We will attempt to shade out & out-compete invasive exotics with native plantings. Japanese Knotweed shown here. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  11. Looking US at US end of left overbank. Many plants providing roughness. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  12. Looking US @ wetland area in upper 1/5 of left overbank. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  13. During high flow stream is aimed straight at the Mega-slide. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  14. Looking US @ old smooth stream channel at toe of Mega-slide. This critical area will be heavily planted in rows perpendicular to high flows. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  15. Mega-slide is tall. Erosion at toe will trigger sediment delivery PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  16. THE STREAM

  17. Looking DS. Debris jam providing bank protection & streamside & aquatic habitat. We will clear channel only. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  18. Looking DS. Most of jam blocking channel will be removed. PRE-PROJECT MEGA-SLIDE-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  20. Looking DS @ workers cutting downed trees. MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  21. Cut logs on overbank in compression against plants or trenched in MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  22. Looking DS @ happy workers making toughest cut MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  23. Large logs were cut into short pieces & dropped into stream MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  24. Looking DS @ workers keying existing jam (that we wanted to remove but could not) into right bank MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  25. Teamwork placing key log into compression against jam. MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  26. Placing smaller logs in jam. MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  27. Looking DS @ workers on jam. Rocks deposited US & to right of jam show jam was acting as a log vane. MEGA-SLIDE DESNAGGING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-23-2008

  28. 2 DAYS (& 3 INCHES OF RAIN) AFTER LOG JAM KEYED INPhotos by DerrickJULY 24, 2008

  35. A couple plantings on the right bank. MEGA-SLIDE PLANTING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-25-2008

  36. Still could not cross the stream so plants had to be transported on public roads to the top of the hill above the Mega-slide. MEGA-SLIDE PLANTING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-25-2008

  37. Then carry plants down the hill & handed over the cut bank. MEGA-SLIDE PLANTING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-25-2008

  38. Sorting plants & getting organized. This eroded bank was heavily planted too. MEGA-SLIDE PLANTING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-25-2008

  39. Planting the US section of the Mega-slide hillside MEGA-SLIDE PLANTING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-25-2008

  40. We planted the flat parts too but I did not get pictures, too busy MEGA-SLIDE PLANTING-DINGMAN’S CR. PIX BY DERRICK 7-25-2008
