The President f the US is seen as the world’s most powerful official The electoral college system determines who becomes President. Each state has a certain number of electoral votes and whoever wins that state gets all those electoral votes. A candidate must get a majority of the electoral votes to win---otherwise the House of Representatives chooses the President. The job of President can have many drawbacks, including Congress, other political parties, and the news media. The President is often seen as a symbolic leader of the nation.

William “Boss” Tweed of NY is infamous for his use of the spoils system to enrich his friends and himself. One criticism of the bureaucracy is that many jobs are redundant. The merit system created a testing system to determine who is best qualified. Our Civil Service system has thousands of jobs that are based on exams taken by applicants. The assassination of President Garfield by a disappointed office seeker pushed the need for reform. Sometimes the many levels of the bureaucracy causes Red Tape. There are actually bureaucracies at the federal, state, and local levels.
