  2. Roles (Protagonist Family) • Jonas- he is the protagonist in this story, received Assignment of Receiver of Memory • Lily- Jonas’s sister is the story • Mother- Has the highest role in The Department of Justice • Father- a nurturer • Gabriel- the newborn who get taken in by Jonas’ father

  3. Roles (Friends & Other) • Fiona- Jonas’ friend from volunteering, he soon develops feelings for her • Asher- Jonas’ best friend, received the assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation • The Giver- Also known as the previous Receiver of Memory, he will transfer memories to Jonas • Birthmother- This was looked down upon for not being honorable to Jonas’ mother • Caretaker- Take care of Elderly and Birthmothers • Elders- The people who control the community and decide the Assignments

Rules • Pilots can not fly over the community(pg. 1) • Can’t play with word “release” (pg. 3) • Only two children per family, one male one female (pg. 8) • After three mistakes, one gets released (pg.9) • If new child doesn’t develop correctly, they are released (pg. 7) • Not aloud to ride bikes until Nine (pg. 13) • Can not look at names until Naming (pg. 12) • Not aloud to take food from Recreation Center (pg. 23)

Rules (cont.) • Females under Nine have to wear hair ribbons (pg. 22) • Can not see anyone in their ‘birthday suit’ but the elderly and the newborn (pg. 30) • One must make an apology if they see anyone all ‘natural’ or make a public disturbance (pg. 30) • Have to take pills for ‘stirrings’ (pg. 37) • If you don’t fit in the community, have to apply for Elsewhere.. (pg. 48)

  6. Rituals • Sing/say the anthem before school every morning • Say their feelings after dinner (pg. 5) • Say their dreams in the morning • Nine get bikes at their Ceremony • Eight starts volunteer work • Nine girls cut off their ribbons • Eight’s comfort object is taken away

  7. Ceremonies • Release of Elder (pg. 7) • Ceremony of Twelve (pg. 17) • Release of Newchild (pg. 7) • Ceremony of Naming (pg. 11) • Matching of Spouses • Ceremony of Loss • Ceremony of Ages
