  2. TV Data Capacity • DTV stations have 19.39 mbps capacity • Bits not used for video may be used for IP traffic • HD requires 12-13 mbps, SD 3-4 mbps • ATSC standard problematic but improving (currently best for NRT applications) • Analog TV has datacasting capacity as well (3-4 mbps)

  3. Wi-Fi/802.11b Wireless • Provides access to IP streams and file transfers • Office and home networks increasingly popular • Provides broadband services in competition to DSL and cable modems • “Guerilla” or community wireless • Security issues may limit access

  4. Other Opportunities • 3G (or 2.5G) wireless • Multichannel Video Distribution & Data Service (12 GHz) • LMDS broadband (27-31 GHz) • MDS/ITFS broadband (2.6 GHz) • Spectrum from UHF TV channels 52-59 (Lower 700 MHz band) (FCC 01-364)

  5. Asset Management • IP oriented “new spectrum” opportunities permit on demand programming • Requires accurate and accessible knowledge about what is available -- metadata • CPB now sponsoring “Public Broadcasting Metadata Model” to develop a shared approach to describing programming and program elements
