His Counter Statement • “Faced with an ethical argument that requires us to give away much of our income, we might ask whether there is any point to a standard that cuts so strongly against the grain of human nature that virtually no one follows it.” (pg. 151)
His Realistic Approach • The Target: 5% of the annual income of those financially comfortable and slightly more for those who are richer
The Public Standard • 10over100 Rule • Israel Shenker’s Approach • “5.10.5.10” Formula
His Ideal Approach • “Superrich” give 3rd of the annual income • The rest in the .1% give a 4th of their annual income • The remainder give approximately a 5th of their annual income
Seven-Point Plan • 1) Pledge to meet the standard • 2) Do your own research • 3) Work out the standard that best fits you • 4) Tell everyone what you have done • 5) Encourage your employees/employers • 6) Contact your national political representatives • 7) Feel good about what you have accomplished
His Inconsistencies • “I include myself---do not go as far as the standard implies” • “We should praise them for what they do rather than focus on how much they could do.” • “He could do more…” • Tons of money spent to support his handicapped mother
Greatest Motivation • A life of greater meaning and fulfillment • “Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy.” -Buddha
Discussion Questions • Does the acknowledgement of Peter Singer’s inconsistencies make you think differently about the process of donating and must he follow his own words in order for you to donate as you would prior to reading his book? • Which of the following proposals made during the chapter would encourage you to donate the most and why?
