CariCOOS Education • Plan focused on improvement of the users understanding of the available coastal weather products
“ClimasCosteros de Nuestras Islas”An Educational Module to learn about wind, waves and currents • Designed to middle & high school (grades 7-12). • The “ClimaCostero de Nuestras Islas” integrates the most important concepts related to waves, currents and wind and its impact on the coastal zone. • This educational tool will promote: • Understanding of the coastal climate. • Safe enjoyment of the coastal environment. • Utilization of CariCOOS data products. • Communication links with stakeholders.
“ClimasCosteros de NuestrasIslas” • Distribution: • Free copies of DVD’s will be distributed to teachers from public and private schools (request: caricoos@gmail.com). • Over 100 copies ready for distribution. • CariCOOS Education Web page: • Teachers / Students / Users • CariCOOS Coastal Weather workshops: to middle and high school teachers (validation). • Presentation to the Education Department (Science Program). • English translation: coming soon!!
Puerto Rico Weather Camp • Since 2010 CariCOOS introduced the concepts of coastal weather and ocean observing tools to the PRWC. • Immersive summer experience for high school students (grades 10-12). • Hosted since 2007 by the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) and supported by NOAA Educational Partnership Program. • Designed to: • Encourage underrepresented students to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). • To motivate and provide tools for exploration of atmospheric sciences, tropical meteorology, oceanography, and other fields of interest for NOAA.
Puerto Rico Weather Camp Ocean Observing Component • Training At-Sea. • Oceanographic instruments deployment. • Data handling. • Workshops on ocean observing tools (i.e. buoys data acquisition and applications). • Training on CariCOOS coastal weather products.
