Is there any way to avoid it? Should it be avoided? COM 315 Grand Canyon Week 6 Discussion 2 What building blocks (from chapter 2 of the textbook) have you used to communicate with people from different cultures? Were these building blocks effective? If so, what made them effective? If not, why were they not effective? COM 315 Grand Canyon Week 6 Assignment 1 Historical or Cultural Museum Visit Details: Visit a museum that focuses on cultural history, preferably the history of a certain cultural group, and spend at least an hour observing the exhibits and listening to the guide (if one is available). Observe aspects of culture as they are presented in the museum and also notice evidence of conflict in their history. Write an essay of 500-750 words about the experience. Where did you go? Who went with you? How long did you stay? What did you learn about the people and how conflicts have shaped their history? What were the positive outcomes of the conflict? What lingering scars do people carry with them from the experience?
Reflect on how much this experience stretched your comfort zone and how this observation could affect your intercultural communication. COM 315 Grand Canyon Week 6 Assignment 2 Collaborative Learning Community: Intercultural Conflict Details: This is a CLC assignment. In your group, choose which movie you will watch among the following: Gangs of New York (1938), 12 Angry Men (1957), Gentleman’s Agreement (1947), and The Philadelphia Story (1940). You can watch the newer versions of these movies, but it is preferable that the older versions are watched, if possible. Groups should find and agree on a movie that is new to the whole group. Find copies at a public library or video rental store and watch the movie to find examples of answers to the following questions: What factors cause intercultural conflict, and how can those conflicts be addressed meaningfully? Watch the characters in the story to determine what contributes to the way they communicate, what creates the conflict, and what they did or could do to address the issue constructively. After you have watched the movie, work with your group to find good examples with which to answer the questions. Note that the cultural differences in these movies may or may not depend on race or ethnicity. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to show what you learned. It should include at least 10 slides, including a title page with group members’ names on it. Each main point should be presented on its own slide with supporting evidence. Include a conclusion slide and a reference slide. Make it fun, but informative, showing depth of thought and critical thinking.
