All of the education settings, especially new ones, are focusing more on how to enable pupils to understand the values of perseverance, effort, practices of learning new methods to promote their abilities and talents. As a teacher or an owner of an English tutoring centre, you are always in search for ways to develop a mindset in your students so that they can score better in exams and be more successful in their life. Here are a few simple steps for your help: 1. Avoid praising sheer effort and intelligence Praising an intelligent student is not bad. However, you should avoid it primarily, as you risk discouraging other learners. Focus on planning and trying new methods in your teaching that can help most of the pupils improve their comprehension on a topic. You need to do what can help your trainees to perform better every time. Here, it means you should do what can help your pupils get better and better by each passing day, month, or year. 2. Maintain diversity in your teaching Exposing several different instructional strategies and methods to your learners will help you create a collection of teaching skills that will enable to handle diverse challenges while instructing students. Pay attention to the correct usage of content, process, and products. Whether you are teaching English or any other subject, try to use the relevant content in different formats – audio/video clips, physical manipulatives (blocks), and presentations. Apart from individual participation, allow students to solve queries in pairs and groups.
3. Use simple gamification elements in your instruction The implementation of gamification elements in your classroom instructions will help you highlight the progress of your students instead of their mistakes. You can modify the way of marking your students’ progress with the use of XP (experience points) instead of simply marking their progress with grades in letters or percentage. Start awarding XP points to your pupils on their participation in class, completing assignments, or in anything that highlight their efforts to learn something. 4. Persuade your learners to elaborate on their answers Asking your pupils to explain their answers after discussion will help you know what they have understood what they haven’t grasped. You can encourage them to create content by going into the depth of a topic. For this, you can apply PBL (problem-based learning) activities and question & answer session after the completion of a topic. 5.Help your pupils change their language while answering a question Suppose that you have discussed a topic in your way. Ask your pupils to elaborate on the same topic differently by changing the language of the content. With this, you will help your students expand their thinking that can lead them to a steady growth path. Conclusion In today’s world, teaching is not limited to make pupils comprehend a topic but explore it further. It can happen when you help your students to go on a path of continuous growth, and for this, you need to create a growth mindset in them.
