What is BMI? Why Is It Important? The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a statistical measurement derived from your height and weight. Although it is considered to be a useful way to estimate healthy body weight, it does not measure the percentage of body fat. BMI Weight Categories: Underweight = BMI<18.5 Normal weight = BMI 18.5-24.9 Overweight = BMI 25-29.9 Obesity = BMI 30-34.9 Severe Obesity = BMI 35-39.9 Morbid Obesity = BMI 40>
Is BMI Always an Accurate Measurement of Obesity? It's important to note that although BMI is accurate most of the time, it may overestimate or underestimate body fat. For example, BMI doesn't distinguish between body fat and muscle mass, which weighs more than fat. Many NFL players have been labeled "obese" because of their high BMI, when they actually have a low percentage of body fat. Some health experts say that body fat percentage is a better measurement of weight status than BMI.
How Should Obesity Be Determined? Because of the possibility for error, BMI should be just one of many gauges used to assess a person's weight status and health. The National Institute of Health recommends that doctors assess whether their patients are overweight based on three factors: • BMI • Waist circumference – a measurement of abdominal fat • Risk factors for diseases associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, high LDL and low HDL cholesterol, high blood sugar, and smoking.
