Why do we look the way we do? • Our DNA, our traits, what we get from our parents (heredity). • Our Genes = code for our traits, made up of a pair of alleles • Alleles are a pair of letters that represent a trait • EX: FF or Ff= Freckles, ff = no freckles WW or Ww = Widow’s Peak, ww = no widow’s peak
Dominant vs. recessive alleles • Each parent has 2 alleles or (letters) for a trait. • CAPITAL LETTERS are called Dominant alleles. When these alleles are present, they take over or show. • lower case letters are recessive alleles, and they are present, but do not show physically.
Phenotype vs. Genotype Phenotype : The organism’s physical appearance, or visible traits. Genotype: The organism’s genetic makeup, allele combination.
Mendel’s work… • P Generation = Parent Generation • F1 Offspring Generation = First Generation. • F2 Offspring Generation = Second Generation.
Plants can also have Dominant and recessive alleles! Gregor Mendel’s work on pea plants. Traits he looked at: • Stem Height • Flower position • Seed shape • Seed color • Pod shape • Pod color
