  1. Family Life &Sexuality

  2. I have gained a better understanding of what happens after fertilization. I can identify the three stages of pregnancy and what occurs during each one. I understand the process of fetal development. I recognize the difficulties and challenges becoming a teenage parent would present. Objectives:

  3. Fertilization defined: The joining of an ovum (an egg) and a sperm. This takes place in the fallopian tubes. To get a clearer picture, please watch this amazing video… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXNaTRs83hE&feature=player_detailpage Let’s review fertilization…

  4. A whole heck of a lot... Basically, there are three stages of prenatal development: 1. Germinal Stage 2. Embryonic Stage 3. Fetal Stage And, pregnancy is broken into three trimesters. 1st Trimester- From Fertilization through week 12 2nd Trimester- Weeks 13-27 3rd Trimester- Weeks 28-40 But what happens after that?

  5. complete the vocabulary challenge

  6. Read the article entitled Prenatal Development: An in-depth look and answer the questions on the corresponding worksheet. Once we finish our worksheet, we will view another brief educational video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoisqOGQIVE&feature=player_detailpage Fetal Development

  7. Fetus-an unborn, developing mammal, after the embryonic stage. Terms to be familiar with…

  8. Placenta- the organ formed in the lining of the uterus by the union of the uterine mucous membrane with the membranes of the fetus, that provides for the nourishment of the fetus and the elimination of its waste products.

  9. Umbilical cord- a cord connecting the embryo or fetus with the placenta of the mother and transporting nourishment from the mother and wastes from the fetus.

  10. The human act or process of giving birth; also known as labor. Labor, by definition means physical or mental exertion, especially when difficult or exhausting; work. What exactly is childbirth?

  11. The average length of time women are in labor is 12 hours. More than FOUR million babies are born each year in the United States. The most popular day for babies to be born is Wednesday; Sunday is the least common day. With about 1,049 male babies for every 1,000 female babies in 2006, boys are keeping the edge in a ratio that's stayed about the same over the past 60 years. Some women deliver babies “naturally,” or without the help of pain medication. Some facts and statistics related to childbirth:

  12. Vaginal Births Cesarean Sections (C-Section) The human act or process of giving birth via vaginal canal. A surgical procedure in which incisions are made through a woman's abdomen and uterus to deliver her baby. There are two different types of deliveries:

  13. Immediately following the birth of the baby, doctors and nurses perform an examination of the baby and conduct various tests on the baby to check his or her wellness. • One of the most important tests conducted is: Apgar Test- a numerical measure of the physical health of a newborn infant derived by evaluating heart rate, muscle tone, respiratory effort, response to stimulation, skin color, and other physiological indicators. • What was your score? Post-Delivery of Baby

  15. Braelyn Marie McLaughlin Birth: Jun. 4, 2009 Death: Aug. 18, 2009 Braelyn Marie McLaughlin, daughter of Hannah McLaughlin and Taylor Elmo, passed away on Aug 18th at the U of W Medical Center. Even though she was in our lives for 75 short days, we will never forget her. She was healthy and growing to over 6 lbs when she suddenly developed respiratory problems and just could not recover. She was surrounded by her loved ones, Hannah, Heidi, Daniel, Emily, Jeremy, Logan, Jay, Jana, Tessa, Kiki, Jill, Anna, Adam, Fran Rollie. As the tears began to flow on that surreal Tuesday afternoon, she slowly drifted away in her mommy's arms. We are comforted to know that her twin sister, Mya, who passed away exactly 9 weeks earlier, would be welcoming her to heaven and in the arms of our Lord. We appreciate the kind thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. And then after all of that…

  16. Let’s discuss some facts…..

  17. 1. The U.S. has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the industrialized world – twice as high as in England or Canada, and ten times higher than Switzerland. 2. In 2011, a total of 329,797 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a live birth rate of 31.3 per 1,000 women in this age group.1 This is a record low for U.S. teens in this age group, and a drop of 8% from 2010. 3. About 1,000,000 teens get pregnant in the United States each year. Nevada has the highest teen birth rate; 113 out of every 1,000 teens will get pregnant. 4. About 1 in 3 women become pregnant at least once before they're 20. 5. A sexually active teen who does not use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year. 6. It affects education - only a third of teen mothers earn their high school diploma. And only 1.5% have a college degree by age 30.

  18. 7. It also affects their kids - girls born to teen mothers are more likely to be teen mothers themselves. Boys born to teen moms are more likely to end up in prison. 8. 75% of girls and over half of boys report that girls who have sex do so because their boyfriends want them to. 9. 8 in 10 girls and 6 in 10 boys say they wish they had waited until they were older to have sex. 10. Most teens (6 in 10) and adults (3 in 4) believe that teen boys often receive the message that they are “expected to have sex.” 11. Diapers are expensive, but it's nothing compared to the $9 billion that teen pregnancy costs the United States each year. This includes increased spending in child welfare costs and public sector health care.

  19. Having a child as a teenager affects all areas of your health…

  20. Social health is the ability to interact effectively with other people and the social environment, to develop satisfying interpersonal relationships, and to fulfill social roles. It involves participation in the community and making contributions to society. Social Health

  21. Physical health is a state of well-being void of disease or illness. To achieve physical wellness and maintain it once it is achieved, one must feed their body with nutritious foods, exercise it regularly, avoid harmful behaviors and substances, and protect oneself from accidents. Physical Health

  22. Intellectual health refers to your ability to think and learn from life experience, being open to new ideas, and the ability of one to question and evaluate information. An individual with good intellectual health skills will be able to make decisions, set realistic, yet challenging goals, and figure out how to handle a problem. Intellectual health

  23. Emotional health refers to both our emotional and mental states, our thoughts and feelings. It involves awareness and acceptance of a wide range of feelings in oneself and others, the ability to express emotions, to function independently and to cope with the challenges of daily stressors. Emotional health

  24. Its essential component is a belief in some meaning or order in the universe. People with good spiritual health identify their own basic purpose in life; learn how to experience love, joy, peace and fulfillment; and help themselves and others achieve their full potential. They concern themselves with, giving, forgiving and attending to others' needs before one's own needs. Spiritual health

  25. The capability to live in a clean and safe environment that is not detrimental to health. The quality of today's environment has a direct effect on personal wellness. To enjoy environmental wellness we require clean air, pure water, quality food, adequate shelter, satisfactory work conditions, personal safety and healthy relationships. Environmental health

  26. Preparing and making use of your gifts, skills and talents in order to gain purpose, happiness and enrichment in your life. Occupational wellness means successfully integrating a commitment to your occupation into a total lifestyle that is satisfying and rewarding. The development of occupational satisfaction and wellness is strongly related to your attitude about your work. Occupational Health

  27. Fill in the effects of having a baby on each dimension of your health. Gentlemen, I recognize that you will not physically carry and deliver the baby, but you are the father and it affects your partner, so share that. On the sheet provided…

  28. From fertilization until childbirth, many changes take place inside the uterus. • The three stages of pregnancy include: • The Germinal Stage • The Embryonic Stage • The Fetal Stage • All three stages are critical during this process. • The process of giving birth is an arduous task; that is why it is called labor. • Teen pregnancy continues to be an issue in the United States.
