  2. How to keep your fridge cool this summer!

  3. As warm weather approaches, it is important to keep your refrigerator cool. After all, you don't want the food you have prepared for all summer barbecues to spoil. But with each house in the neighborhood blowing its AC, your refrigerator will work harder than usual. At Doorstep Hub, we are here for all your repair and appliance questions. But here are some helpful tips that you can incorporate to keep your fridge running all summer.

  4. Separate your Appliances: Now we know that sometimes this is completely out of your control, however, if you can, keep your refrigerator away from appliances like the stove or dishwasher. The heat generated by these appliances can make your refrigerator work harder to keep its temperature cool. This can then increase your electricity bill, which no one wants. Keep Your Refrigerator Stocked: You may think that an empty refrigerator does not have to work as hard to keep it cool as there is nothing in it. After all, there is nothing to cool, right? It is a myth that has often plagued many refrigerators. Keeping your fridge well-filled helps regulate the temperature. If you only have a few things in the fridge, placing large jugs of water as placeholders can make your fridge think it's full and shouldn't be working as hard. Save money and keep your fridge happy. It’s a win for both parties!

  5. Cover Your Food: It can be tempting, especially when you're in a hurry, to want to just put a bowl of food in the fridge without covering it. However, you should take the extra time to transfer your food to a closed container. When your food is left uncovered, the moisture from the food is released into the air, and then your refrigerator is made to work harder to keep things not only fresh but dry. Covering your food will also help them stay fresh and not dry out strangely. Keep your refrigerator at the recommended temperature:When it is hot outside, it may seem like a good idea to lower the temperature to keep your food longer, but it is not. The FDA recommends keeping your refrigerator at 40 degrees or less and your freezer at 0 degrees. By keeping your refrigerator at a cooler temperature than necessary, you will not only significantly increase your electricity bill, but it will also prolong the operation of the compressor, which then wears out more quickly.

  6. Don’t Put Hot Leftovers In the Fridge:You may think you are effective in placing leftovers in the refrigerator right after cooking them, but it is not as effective as you think. Placing hot food in the refrigerator can significantly increase the temperature, making the compressor more difficult to cool. Let your food cool to room temperature, which will help neutralize the temperature when you put it back in the refrigerator. Of course, don't leave your food for too long, especially the meat. FDA states that food should not be left out of the refrigerator for more than two hours. Keep Your Condenser Coils Clean:The condenser coils in your refrigerator generate heat, which causes the compressor to operate. When dust, dirt and especially animal hair collects around the coils, the system can overheat, causing the compressor to rupture, and then your refrigerator cannot keep the food inside cold. Most coils are located on the back of the refrigerator; you will need to pull the refrigerator from the wall to access it. You may be able to access it from the front if you remove the grille. Use a vacuum cleaner or bristle brush to help clean the coils every few months. You will want to be sure to take care of this if you have a pet that throws frequently.
