Mango Farming in Kenya Current Status • Main varieties • Apple • Van Dyke • Tommy Atkins • Ngowe • Infrastructure – is poor leading to high transport cost • Low farmgate prices – ranges between Ksh.1-2 per fruit • High input cost – especially pesticides
Low fruit quality due to pests and diseases like • Mongo weevil • Fruit fly • Anthracnose • Poor market – farmers depend on the domestic and to a small extent on foreign market especially the Middle East • Infiltration of broker – offering farmers low prices
Challenges at various points in the mango value chain • High taxation – due to multiple taxation • Poor and unstructured marketing infrastructure – leading to low prices • Low availability of good quality planting materials
Challenges cont. • Lack of information • Market demand and suitable varieties for the various ecological zones • Control of mango fruit weevil • Post harvest loses especially due to poor storage and transport system • Tedious product certification- in cases of value addition • Betrayal of farmers by buyers – unhonored contracts • Inadequate market research skills • High cost of inputs
