  1. Residential Property Surveyors Associationand the RICSCompetitors or Colleagues? Peter Bolton King FRICS, FNAEA, FNAVA, CIPS Global Residential Director

  2. One destination?A generation gap?A lack of future surveyors?RICS is getting the message out.

  3. RICS recent consumer survey “The home buying ticking time bomb” • 94% agreed that it was important to commission a survey • Nearly a third failed to do so • 89% who didn’t get a survey now think independent advice is important • 73% who did get a survey said it provided them with peace of mind • 50% felt is was value for money. • Those who did not get a survey had repair bills on average of £5,750 • Worryingly there was a serious lack of understanding • 60% incorrectly identified an estate agents primary responsibility • 1 in 10 thought the agent acted for the buyer with 1 in 5 thinking they act equally for the buyer and seller. • Survey conducted in August 12 with 1017 respondents.

  4. What can the RICS offer you? • Demand for AssocRICS membership and for some this can lead to full Chartered Surveyor status • RICS has just simplified the work required to become an Associate • Anyone holding the Home Inspector qualification as a level 3 only needs to have 2 years experience, but this has to be across the broader breadth of competencies and not solely in the narrow field of Home Inspector or Energy Assessment. • If you meet the above then you can go straight into the Assoc Assessment process

  5. Simplified Assessment Process for AssocRICS • 2500 word summary of experience covering all six technical competences and eight mandatory competencies (soft skills and general business) • 2000 word case study based on a single project, but expressed in terms of two main technical competences used in your day to day role • 24 hours professional development • Successful completion of the RICS online ethics module • No longer a requirement to put together numerous different papers

  6. Likely to be two pathways of interest to Home Inspectors • Technical competencies for Assoc in Building Surveying • Building Pathology • Construction Technology • Contract administration • Design and Specification • Inspection • Legal and Regulatory Compliance • Technical Competencies for Survey and Valuation • Building Pathology • Inspection • Legal and Regulatory Compliance • Measurement • Property Records • Valuation

  7. Remember AssocRICS =

  8. Other Possible Opportunities for RICS membership • Anyone with an NVQ level 4 across the range of technical competencies might be eligible for direct Assoc assessment • Anyone with a degree and 5 years experience working at a senior advisory level might be eligible for the Professional Experience Route to MRICS • A simplified progression from Assoc to MRICS is now available without the need to do 900 hours from a final level of an accredited degree • Now possible with 5 years work experience to carry out further study / training, a period of further work experience at an advanced level and successful completion of the APC final assessment including a peer review but RICS chartered members. • The new Associate launches later this week so please visit • www.rics.org/associates
