Reviewing Ratios When: • When the question asks me to write the ratio. or • When the question asks me what is the ratio. How: • I simply write the numbers that correspond to each quanity. • I must pay careful attention to the order of the words in the question. • Ratios can be written in 3 forms: a:b, a to b, • Ratios can be simplified by using division, when needed. Example: I can check my answer by: writing the words for each quantity in the order the question asks.

Reviewing Ratios When: • The question asks me to explain the meaning. How: • First, I must decide if it is a part to part, part to whole, or whole to part comparison. • If it is a part to part comparison, I can read the ratio left to write. • If it is a part to whole or a whole to part, I must discuss the whole before the part Example: part to part: “For every ___ _____, there are ____ ________.” Part to whole or whole to part: Out of every __________, ________ are I can check my answer by: Comparing my explanation to the question, or drawing a diagram of my explanation.

Example: I can check my answer by: Cross Multiplying any two ratios in the table.

How: • I can use a ratio table to organize my thoughts and give me a visual. • I must be careful to list the quantities in the order they are listed in the question. • I must figure out how the ratio is being scaled (up or down) and by how much. • Sometimes I may have to scale down, before I can scale up. • I can also use cross multiplication and division to find equivalent cross products. Examples: I can check my answer by: cross multiplying the original ratio and the ratio I created.
