This presentation focuses on three questions: Why? What? How?
Method to control harmful algae blooms(HAB). • Algaecide • Aeration • Mixing • Ultrasound
Culturing conditions: temperature, medium, LED light. • Inoculation shaker • Batch culture with 250ml baffled flask
Heterotrophic growth is 3 times higher than autotrophic growth Growth rate increases with temperature (24-32ºC)
High biomass concentration under red or blue light. Light intensity enhanced the growth rate and concentration.
Blue light favored the protein synthesis. • Protein content had negative correlation with temperature. • Bradford protein assay
Red light favored the lipid synthesis in the exponential phase. • Positive correlation between lipid content and temperature. • Nile-red staining lipid assay
Light quality showed little effect on carbohydrate synthesis • A small increase observed with temperature. • Phenol-sulfuric acid assay
Summary • Growth kinetics and Nutrient composition • culture temperature light quality light intensity • Acknowledgement • Dr. Tyler W. Johannes • The University of Tulsa • Russell School of Chemical Engineering • Indreesh Badrinarayanan • Questions?
