Summary outline • What is SANREM • What happened during the workshop? • What we learned during this workshop? • Timeline and where do we go from here?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management Collaborative Research Support Program Reminder:SANREM CRSP Mission Promote: • stakeholder empowerment • improved livelihoods through knowledge-based sustainable agriculture and natural resource management systems
SANREM seeks to develop: • Communities of practice • - sharing knowledge and information • - inviting participation • Scientific and scholarly works • - increasing knowledge that • is accessible and useful • - comparative (In country and out)
SANREM Timeline __________________________________________________________________________________________ Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management Collaborative Research Support Program
Summary of workshop • Opening presentations – learn about current programs; Are they models for SANREM ? • Roundtable discussion - listen to differing view points • Small group discussion - identify knowledge gaps and learn about local needs • Report back to determine priority areas
Key findings • Many groups have a strong interest and great deal of knowledge in forest conservation and utilization • Should capture that knowledge so that it can be applied to the problems • Models of restoration exist and need to be assessed for appropriate use in corridor • Land tenure issues are complex and need to be incorporated into land management • Interest in coordination between groups
Key findings (2) • Restoration critical as there is a threat of fragmentation • Variety of forest products and uses (honey, bamboo, Pandanus, essential oils, construction lumber, medicinal plants, crayfish) • Sustained use of these is important to occupants • Extensive knowledge of reforestation in this region – What can we learn from this? • Others?
What we learned • Networking – learned much about each others’ projects (such as ERI, CMP, etc.) • Learned much about VALBIO • Learned about the Ranomafana area • Identified key issues associated with restoration
Next steps: • Summary paper of this workshop and findings • Review of current and past reforestation by Sarah and Charlie • Complete long-term proposal by the end of September • Identify other sources of support • Collect letters of support

Key findings • Land tenure • Natural regeneration • Conflict or cooperation between agriculture and NR conservation • Others?
