Case History • Foraminifera’s first “mention” was in Herodotus (fifth century B.C.) who discovered that the limestone of the Egyptian pyramids contained the large benthic foraminifer Nummulites. Foraminifera was recognized as protozoa in 1835 by Dujardin and shortly afterwards D’Orbingy produced the first classification. The 1872 HMS Challenger cruiser found so many samples that scientists continued to work on the material well into the 1880’s. Work on foraminifera continued into the twentieth century and is still developing today.
