  4. justification • Cooking and heating food: • - aids digestion • - kills pathogens • - makes food more appetizing • - provides more taste and texture options • - prevents “leftover” waste

  5. Existing solutions • Heating Element Lunch Box: • Patent #6144016 • insulated compartments • AC or battery powered • Unspecified heating capabilities

  6. Existing solutions • Gel Packet Lunch Thermos: • Patent #5259026 • insulated compartments • gel packets with metallic spheres maintain temp.

  7. Existing solutions • USB Bento Box: • requires USB port • only “keeps food warm”.

  8. Existing solutions • Military Flameless Ration Heaters: • heat food to 96 oC in under 12 minutes • require addition of water

  9. How FRh’s Work • Mg(s)+ H2O(l)  Mg(OH)2(s) + H2(g) + Heat

  10. Proposed solutions • Ethan’s Idea: • Compartmented chemical heater

  11. Proposed solutions • Nathaniel’s Idea: • - Metal box with electric heat

  12. Proposed solutions • Paige’s Idea: • - L-shaped chemical heater

  15. SOLUTION DECISION

  16. “FINAL” SOLUTION

  17. MOCK-UPS & REVISION • Pouch in Conductive Tupperware • Bag needs ventilation • Too much water lowers maximum temperature • Tupperware prevents heat transfer • Direct contact with FRH deforms lunch box insulation

  18. Prototype design • Revised concept:

  19. Prototype design • MATERIALS: • Size Name Quantity • 6” x 8”x 0.003” Sous-vide bag 1 • 4” x 8”x 0.008” PVC Film 1 • 4” x 5” x 3/16” TekFoil rectangle 1 • 3.5” x 4.5” x 1/8” FRH 1 • 0.0019” thick 3M Foil Tape Roll 1
