  4. Software • We will be installing a Google Chrome Operating System. • Google Chrome is a web based Operating System which aims to provide a fast, simple, and more secure computing experience.

  5. Installation steps • 1. Go to www. http://theedublogger.com/2011/06/13/how-to-get-chrome-os/ to get the latest version of the Chromium OS. • 2. Download the file to a USB. • 3. You will need an extraction software such as WinRar(free!) to extract the file you just downloaded. • Download this from http://www.win-ar.com/download.html. • 4. Unzip the .tar.gz file you just downloaded in step 2. • 5. You will now need another piece of software called Image Writer for Windows (also free!). Go to https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/. • 6. – you want the one on top that ends in binary.zip. After unzipping this file, click on Win32DiskImager.exe to run the program. • 7. Once running the Disk Imager program, click on the blue folder to choose the .img file you extracted in step 5. Choose the file letter associated with your clean and empty USB drive, and click on ‘Write‘. Accept the warning that shows up. • 8. Put the USB drive in any computer that you want to test out Chromium OS on. Restart the computer and choose the boot settings before Windows launches. On most machines, this is done by hitting f12 as soon as you turn on or restart a computer. You have to move quick here and other f keys may be needed depending on your computer. • 9. Select the option to boot from USB. • 10. Login using your Google account or Google Apps account. Welcome to Chromium!

  8. Performance on pc • Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. Google has designed an OS that is fast and lightweight and starts up and gets you onto the web in a few seconds. • The user interface is minimal • Google has gone back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

  9. Summary • Google Chrome OS is a web-based system, so all applications are web applications; this provides powerful and simple manageability and security. • It is cost efficient, fast and reliable, which makes it perfect for schools such as Tiwi Island College.
