  2. French Aid • French was a secret *ally for the Americans • Did not want to be full ally until America proved it could win a conventional battle • Ally = a country that agrees to help another country achieve a common goal

  3. Turning Point • After the Battle of _____________, King Louis XVI of France publicly recognized America’s independence (1776)

  4. Military Help • Know as the “soldier’s friend,” _______________ was a French aristocrat that was given command of an army division. • Persuaded French king to send a 6,000 man army to America • Became an American, and French hero

  5. Spanish Aid • After French, Spanish step in and capture Natchez and Baton Rouge • Prevented Britain from attacking from Southwest colonies.

  6. Significance of France/Spain • By entering the war, France and Spain forced the British to fight different enemies by land and sea

  7. Valley Forge • Washington’s forces were driven out of Philadelphia and spent the Winter (1777-1778) in Valley Forge • Over ¼ died from malnutrition, exposure, or diseases

  8. Wilderness Road • Trail helped built by Daniel Boone that opened the area between the Appalachians and Mississippi River to settlement • Kentuckian __________________ formed an army to capture British outposts on Western Frontier • Captured Kaskaskia without a fight • Also captured Fort Sackville

  9. War by sea • By 1777, Britain had over 200 warships off American coast • America commissioned over 1,000 _______________ (privately owned ship that has been granted permission by wartime government to attack enemy)

  11. Conclusion • Aid from Foreign allies was critical • Strategy of creating multiple fronts to war • This war will be won on land
