Fitzgerald in the Roaring ‘20s • He was one of the greatest examples of the frivolous lifestyle of the 1920s. • He did not care about the future finances and enjoyed spending every penny he earned.
Personal Problems: • Fitzgerald drank heavily. • Had many financial issues, taking out loans frequently from friends and colleagues. • Zelda suffered mental problems and was often hospitalized.
Impact on Society • Fitzgerald wrote “shamelessly.” His writing for the first time gave a voice to the youth. Older generations found Fitzgerald’s writing to be a horror. "I cannot bear to think that our young men are merely living for four years in a country club and spending their lives wholly in a spirit of calculation and snobbishness," college President John Grier Hibben wrote. • He writes about the American Dream and views it realistically, as a wonderful but also depressing thing. Also depicts the gap between the rich and poor in his writing.
Modernists • Fitzgerald was part of the American literature movement known as Modernism. • It lasted form 1914-1945, the time between the two world wars. • Modernists write with that belief that during the war America lost its innocence and their literature is marked with the idea of living for the moment. • Fitzgerald belonged to a group of authors known as the Expatriates. These were American artists who disillusioned with the break down of the American dream spent a considerable amount of time in Europe.
The Great Gatsby • Based partially on Fitzgerald’s own life. • Connections can be made between Jay Gatsby and the narrator Nick to Fitzgerald • Portrayed the 1920s, not only the outer glam but also the inners slums.
Other Novels • This Side of Paradise (1920) • The Beautiful and Damned (1922) • The Great Gatsby (1925) • Tender is the Night (1934) • The Last Tycoon (1941)
