  2. Grieg • Born in Norway • First music teacher was his mother (She was a wonderful pianist) • Studied at the best music conservatory in Europe -- in Leipzig, Germany • Played the piano • The piece that made Grieg famous was his one and only piano concerto. • Considered a nationalistic composer

Peer Gynt • Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen asked Grieg to write music for his play Peer Gynt. • In the story of Peer Gynt, Gynt makes off with a bride and then ditches her. • Later he meets a woman who is green, only to find out she’s the daughter of the Troll King. • Gynt is held captive by the King because he wants Gynt to become a troll. Gynt escapes. His escape is told in the song, “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” • Later in the play Gynt meets a woman named Anitra, who dances for him.
