ElihuBurrit • Born December 8th, 1810 • New Britain, Connecticut • Died March 6th, 1879 • Social reformer, one of many in the 2nd great awakening • Prominent advocate of the temperance movement, abolitionist movement, and worked tirelessly as well to promote world peace • Organized a small meeting known as the First international congress of the Friends of Peace, an attempt at a body similar to the United Nations, but failed to make a long term effect.

Elihu’s Works • Wrote over 37 books, most famous of which are: • Sparks from the Anvil • Ten Minute Talks • Pamphlet – A Journal of a Visit of Three Days to Skibbereen • Spoke supposedly twenty to thirty languages • Appointed by President Lincoln as foreign consul to Britain • Gave up hopes for world peace after the Civil War and Crimean war started • Trained as a blacksmith in his early years, was titled as a “Learned Blacksmith” by age twenty-five.
