Fifth Grade District Workday August 16, 2012
Forms and Changes • Red and Blue folders • K-5 Recording Sheet now reading and math combined • Reading Progress Chart (light blue) • Math Mastery List options • Universal Screeners: Whole Numbers (AS, MD); Fractions (LD, UD, MD); Decimals (AS, MD) • Three 5th grade Case 21 benchmarks (pacing)
Spreadsheet • Start off the year collecting data as usual (with a little less data expected) • Data collection process is subject to change throughout the year • Fifth Grade example
Writing Portfolio • You can use the blue folder for this if you wish or you can buy your own; could also be digital • Should include these pieces (at the least): • Words I’m Learning • Writing Topics • My Finished Writing • Writing should be done across the curriculum and should be graded based on several samples • One exemplar piece from each type of writing (narrative, opinion, informational) should go in the K-5 portfolio from May (all others sent home with student). It does not move on at the end of the year. • Just goes on recording sheet, not on spreadsheet
What goes in the K-5 portfolio (red folder) for each grade level? • Fourth: (purge K-2 samples for grade level students and place samples for BGL students in PEP if appropriate) • Fifth: SRI printout EOY (graph), final running record, exemplar writing pieces from May, Spring Universal Screener probe • Staple the samples together and place a sticky note on top with the grade level • Example

Integrated Unit Planning • When planning, use a backward design approach, like the Understanding by Design template. jaymctighe.com/wordpress/wp-content/.../UbD_Template_2.docx • In backward design, you start with the big ideas you want the student to understand by the end of the unit, then design assessments that will provide evidence of whether students achieved those understandings. Last, you make a learning plan that will help students come to the big understandings. • It’s often helpful to decide on the big understandings from Social Studies first, then to determine how literacy can be used to meet them.
Changing the World through Exploration Unit • This is a sample unit based on fifth grade social studies standards. • We’re going to briefly show you how we wrote the unit, then used the unit to plan a full day of ELA/Social Studies block.
Ways to incorporate writing across subject areas • The three types of writing fifth graders will work on are informational, opinion, and narrative. • Ways to incorporate writing: • Quick writes • Science prompts • Math journals • Responses to discussion or text in ELA and Social Studies • Graphic organizers • Personal journal entries • Reader’s theater/skits • Songs • Jigsaw • Stories
